Harvey A. Messamer, son of Joseph M. and Mary C. Messamer, was born Oct. 15, 1872 near Adel, Dallas County, Iowa and departed this life Oct. 7, 1938, aged 65 years, 11 months and 22 days. His entire life was spent in this vicinity except for one year in Pennsylvania and about one year in Florida. For 33 years he lived on the same farm.
On January 2, 1901 he was united in marriage to Mertie J. Norris, of Norris, Huntingdon County, PA. To this union four children were born, Joseph, Burton, Mrs. Mildred Bohrn and Mabel. Besides these one son-in-law, two daughters-in-law, four grandchildren, five brothers and two sisters, together with a host of other relatives and friends are left to mourn his loss. At an early age Harvey accepted Christ and became a member of the Church of the Brethren. For twelve years he has been the teacher of the United Workers' Sunday school class. He was keenly interested in both district and local church work and has been overseer of the cemetery adjacent to the church for a number of years. As a citizen of the community he was active in everything that was for the promotion of character building and the general welfare of all with whom he came in contact. He was a loving husband, a kind and generous father, a Christian gentleman who endeared himself to all who knew him.
