Orpha had another man in her life who she wanted to marry, but her parents made her marry John LePage. The other man became quite prosperous.
He was a lumber jack and after they moved to the upper areas of Wisconsin and Michigan and southern Canada, where he worked in the sawmills and as a lumber jack.
Orpha self-taught herself arithmetic and was able to start a small store where she sold fresh-baked goods and other items to the men in the camps.
Family lore is John hated the fact she was doing so well, and was abusive until she threatened him with a knife.
Orpha had a horse named Nelliw who always knew when Orpha was pregnant.
Orpha and a neighbor woman would race their horses and wagons down the road but when she was pregnant, Nellie wouldn't run.
Every other year, the women delivered each other's babies.

partial obituary of Susan Stansbury Shane, Hiram's wife.
...death been a continuous member of this one church for a period of 59 years, or a longer time than any other living member. The lots on which the M.E. Church stands were donated by her husband, who was present and took part in the ceremony of laying the corner stone of the present structure.
She was a member of and the oldest settler on the Old Settler's Association and a prime mover in the organization of this society, in the annual meetings of which she took a deep interest. The easy chair presented to her by the Association a few years ago is now in the possession of Miss Cora caldwell, a granddatughter, who was with her and helped care for her during her last illness.
For fifty-one years and six months the farm northeast of town was her home but about seven years ago she moved to Brimfield where, with her yoiungest dayghter, Miss Lula Shane, she has since resided. During the years she has been an invlaid she had been tenderly and devotedly cared for by this daughter, who has been constantly by her side, anticipating her every wish.
Out of a family of nine children but two brothers survive her: Thomas Stansbury, of Canton, and Wm. Stansbury, of Brimfield. From a vast prairie wilderness she lived to see this land subdued, brought to the height of cultivation and made to blossom as the rose. During her long life she noted these changes that were being wrought and many a happy hour has been spent by the younger generation in listening to the tales of early pioneer days as told by Grandma Shane.
The funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon, at the M.E. Church, conducted by the pastor, I.W. Donning, assisted by Revs. Jordan and Cox. The floral tributes were very beautiful and appropriate in design. The church was filled to the doors, all the children and many grandchildren being in attendance, together with a large number of other relatives and friends. The remains were tenderly lais away in the Brimfield Cemetery, by the side of those of her beloved companion, who had preceded her to the other shore. | Stansbury, Susan Lyon (I1826)

PLACE NOTES: In 1772, the springs were part of the newly formed Berkeley County, named after its colonial governor, Norborne Berkeley. The waters became known as Berkeley Springs because the existing protocol was to name springs after the colonial Virginia county in which they were located. Previously, the area had been called Warm Springs and Medicinal Springs among other names.
Bath became known permanently to the world as Berkeley Springs in 1802 when the Virginia postal system was established in the new nation, and there already was a Bath, Virginia, in Bath County.
In 1861, many residents of Virginia were opposed to Virginia's secession from the United States, some calling the act of secession treasonous. Following the Wheeling Conventions of 1861, a referendum was held in 41 mostly northwestern Virginia counties on whether to secede from Virginia and seek admission to the United States as a new state. An overwhelming majority of voters in these counties voted in favor of the proposal. The United States admitted the State of West Virginia on June 20, 1863. Berkeley Springs remained the conventional name used for the town. Its sister city is Bath, England. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Springs,_West_Virginia; accessed 12 Nov 2022 | Shane, David (I1907)
