William Trowbridge passed his boyhood in his native town, New Haven, Conn. On January 2, 1681/82, he received a grant of 50 acres of land in the town of Suffield, Conn., and on March 9 following he was invited to teach the first school established there, at a salary of 10 pounds per annum for five years and a payment for every additional scholar.
He married and made his home in his native town. He was a planter and shipmaster, sailing out of New Haven. He was captain of the sloop, Adventure, when it was taken by the French on July 20, 1697. Captain Trowbridge was accustomed to make voyages to the West Indies, Fayal and other foreign ports, and died on one of these voyages. He attended the First Church, of which his wife was admitted a member May 15, 1689. | Trowbridge, William (I3034)

Born at Fairfield, Fairfield County, CT, 24 May 1783; died at Medina Township, Peoria County, IL, 2 December 1856, age 73 years 6 months 6 days; buried at LaSalle Cemetery, Chillicothe, Peoria County, IL; married at Coventry, Tolland County, CT, 6 October 1809, Mary Polly, daughter of Ebenezer and Phebe (Carpenter) Colman, born 16 August 1787, died at Chillicothe, Peoria County, IL, 24 December 1861, age 77 years 4 months 8 days, buried at LaSalle Cemetery, Chillicothe, Peoria County, IL.
"served in the United States army until the close of the war of 1812, and while in the service saw much fine farming land, and becoming disgusted with the rough and stony country in which his family awaited his return, after being discharged he removed with them, and in company with many of his neighbors, in wagons, crossed the Alleghany mountains to Ohio, settleing at first in Ross county, and afterwards in Harrison township, Jackson county.
Here he was followed in a few years by many of his old neighbors from Delaware county, some of whom were afterwards pioneer settlers in Peoria county, among them the families of Reeds, Roots and Hicks. After a residence of some thirteen years in Ohio, during which Simon and Aaron Reed had removed west to Peoria county, [Gershom] became smitten by Illinois fever, caught from Simon Reed, who had returned with glowing accounts of the land to be had in that State, and in the year 1828 the family left their farm in Ohio, and started in their wagons for Illinois, piloted on their way by Simon Reed. The journey occupied twenty-days, camping out every night, but two, in a tent. They arrived in Peoria, September 21." (The History of Peoria County, Illinois)
"Gershom Silliman and family settled on Section 2 of Medina Township, Peoria County, IL, in 1831." (The History of Peoria County)
"The family records show that Rev. Gershom Silliman, who was born and reared in Connecticut, served as a soldier during the war of 1812, in Capt. Denio's Company, Col. Fitzwilliam's Regiment, First New York Militia. After his marriage to Polly Colman, of Connecticut, he removed to New York and settled in Delaware County, thence proceeding further west in 1814, and identifying himself with the pioneers of Jackson County, OH. Still there came to his soul the call of the wilderness. While Illinois was still on the outpost of civilization and the region beyond the Mississippi an unexplored land of opportunity, he traveled to Illinois, settling in Peoria County, in 1828, and remaining in the locality until his death. To him belonged the distinction of being the first Baptist clergyman to settle in Peoria County. A man of fine education, broad classical attainments, the highest patriotism, and an undying faith in the future of our country, he gave to his descendants the example of a noble life and left to them an unblemished name." (History of McLean County)

Born Johannes Philip Liebrich in Germany, Johannes obviously Anglisized his name to John Philip Leebrick after his arrival in America.
Early Pennsylvania Births (1675-1875) by Dr Charles Fisher lists his birth year as 1696, however his gravestone lists it as 1702.
Date is also given as 1696 in Leebrick family records in the Oklahoma Historical Society.
Following is from "History of Dauphin County": John Philip Lebreg (as the name was then spelled) was born in 1696, in Manheim, Germany, from whence he emigrated to Pennsylvania, settling in Manheim, Lancaster county, where he passed the remainder of his life". He died on 17 Sep 1785 in Manheim, Pennsylvania. Year is given as 1778 by Oklahoma Historical Society. This date is also given in the "Commemorative Biographical Encyclopedia of Dauphin County, Pa" and in "History of Dauphin County".. He was buried in Manheim, Pa. Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery Johannes Liebrech arrived in Philadelphia 25 Sep 1754 on the ship "Adventure" from Hamburg, Germany. Children from adm account P392 misc. 1784-1787 Lancaster Court House
The first member of the Leebrick family to arrive in America was Johannes Philip Liebrich 1st, who probably arrived in Philadelphia on the "Adventure" out of Hamburg, Germany in 1754. Church records show he was born 15 January 1702 in Mannheim, Germany and died 17 September 1785, age 81 years 8 months 2 days in Manheim, Pennsylvania and is buried in the cemetery of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Manheim, Pennsylvania. The church record of burials was compiled in 1942 from grave stones, some of which were severely eroded. Also the early ones were written in German. Also in the church record is a Catharine Liebrich, born February 1, 1717, died September 9, 1785 who probably was his wife.
John and Catharine had five children, John Philip Nicholas Liebrich, born 1748 and four daughters. The first was Apollonia, who married Valentine Gardner; the second, Mary Elizabeth, who married Daniel Newman 15 December 1775; the third, Hannetta, who married Charles Wilsbach, and the fourth Margaret, who married Daniel Briligam.
John apparently remarried in Manheim after his arrival, however we have no record of his occupation. His will, recorded in the Lancaster County courthouse, Lancaster Pa. was drawn 30 April 1785. He names his children as above and places Nicholas after Apollonia and Mary Elizabeth.
In 1984, I visited the Zion Lutheran Church in Manheim with the cemetery in the side yard. The Leebrick stones are mostly red sandstone and about the fifth row back from the street and more or less centered. The name is spelled Librich and Liebrech. One stone in German is Johannes Liebrich 1st.
