158	711 JACOB MILLER Jacob Miller, whose death was noted in these columns last week, was born April 11, 1801 in Mifflin County. While he was quite young his parents moved to the farm in Trough Creek valley, on which C.W. Steele now lives. He bought the tract of land on which he died about 1832. He cleared the ground, raised the buildings and for nearly 60 years it was the dearest spot on earth to him. About 1828 he was married to Rachel Dell of Hare's valley, who died December 12, 1849, aged 40 years, 6 months and 10 days. To this union, thirteen children-5 sons and 8 daughters- were born. They are George, Henry and David, and Mrs. Mattie Stever of this [], Mrs George Beaty of Shirley township, and Mrs Ann Miller, of Blair county. About 1851 he was again married to Elizabeth Taylor. To this union three sons and three daughters were born, of whom two sons and one daughter survive. They are Gideon, Abram and Miss Judith, all of this vicinity. Mr. Miller was a man of remarkable [] endurance. His record as a hunter has never been surpassed in this []. Up to within the past few months nothing delighted him more than to start with his gun on a hunt, and his home was always an hospitable place. The immediate cause of his death was a stroke which he received the previous Monday, from which time he was unconscious. 159	720 DIED MILLER - Near Mapleton, on April 7th 1878, Mrs. Elizabeth, wife of Geo. Miller, aged 52 years, 7 months and 25 days. Sister Miller was a member of the U.B. Church at Mapleton. Her suffering was quite a trial indeed, yet withal she bore it with Christian fortitude and patience, and with a glorious hope she waited until the solemn summons came. Her life was one of diligence as a wife and mother, and worthy of imitation in her Christian deportment. Although for some years she was not permitted to frequent a house of the Lord (on account of declining health), yet her faith was firm and she longed to pass over the river. She leaves to mourn their loss, a kind husband, four daughters and three sons, all dear and affectionate. The youngest was her pet daughter, aged about 11 years, with whom the parting was heart touching; none knew her but to love her and our loss is her eternal gain. Loved ones need not mourn as those who have no hope. She cannot come to you but Christ has opened up a way by which you can go to her. "Seek that way."	Buckley, Elizabeth (I1552)
160	721 MRS. ALICE SARAH PARKER Mrs. Alice Sarah Parker died at her late home in Alexandria on Thursday evening, April 22, 1937, at 5:15 o'clock. Mrs. Parker had been ill ten months and death was due to a complication of diseases. She was born near Mapleton on October 23, 1854, a daughter of George and Elizabeth (Buckley) Miller, both deceased. At the time of death she was aged 82 years, 5 months and 29 days. On May 20, 1880 she was united in marriage to David E. Parker. who preceded her in death in February 27, 1937. Mr. and Mrs. Parker had resided in Altoona until 1924 when they came to Alexandria to live. She was a faithful and devout member of the Presbyterian Church at Alexandria. She leaves to mourn her passing, two daughters: Mrs. Clara Jones, and Miss Dora Parker, of Alexandria and two grandchildren, Mrs. Nora (sic) Shane, of Beltsville, Maryland and Robert Jones of Altoona. One sister, Mrs. Anna Miller, of Mapleton and seven great gandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held at her late home in Alexandria on Sunday afternoon, April 25, 1937, at 2:30 o'clock, with the Rev. H.T. Smith, officiating. 161	729 ROBERT PARKER Robert Parker, whose illness has been mentioned in these columns, died of heart trouble at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Annie Slates, in this place at 10 o'clock Tuesday evening, October 25, 1892. His remains were interred in Mountain View Cemetery, Thursday afternoon, services being conducted by Rev. A.W. Maxwell. Mr. Parker was born in Centre county, November 16, 1813, hence was at the time of his death 78 years, 11 months, and 9 days. He was married to Miss Mary C. Robley, September 3, 1835. They commenced housekeeping at Spruce Creek, lived some time in Mifflin county and in 1863 moved to Smith valley, where Mrs. Parker died August 20, 1880. In 1882 he broke up housekeeping and with his daughter Annie spent a year in the West. Two sisters- Mrs. Catharine Clark, of Bellwood, and Mrs. Reuben Dittsworth, of Neff's Mills--and eight of his children survive him. The children are William, of Iowa, Mrs. Annie Slates and Albert M., of Mapleton; Hiram, Mrs. Mary Comstock, Oliver, and David, of Altoona, and Mrs. Laura Smith, of Cass township. Mr. Parker was a good citizen and a devout Christian man. When convinced that a thing was right nothing could swerve him. This is illustrated by his convictions on the prohibition question. He was opposed to the rum traffic and for years only one prohibition vote was polled at each election in Union township and everybody who knew him knew it was Robert Parker's vote. A few days before his death his pastor asked him, " Well, father, how is it now, down along the river?" His reply was,"Oh, that's all right; I fixed that matter many years ago." Such a man would naturally be greatly missed in any community. The friends, who are thankful for the kindness shown them during Mr. Parker's long illness, have the sympathy of the community. Ada was listed as Ada Finley age 19 she had been married for 3 yrs and had one child. That child is also in house list as Ray Finley a ffemale age 2. That would be Mrytle Rachel Finley. 191	Albert Shane, 78 years old, a life long resident of Peoria County died at his 1005 Knoxville Avenue home. He was born in Brimfield August 16,1844, spending most of his life on a farm near Lawn Ridge. He moved to Speer in 1902, residing there 19 years, then to this city. He married Emma Hensel in 1869. Thirteen children were born to them, nine of whom survive. He is survived by his wife and nine children, Mrs. James Peterson, Wyoming, Illinois, USA; Daniel Shane, Glen Elder, Kan; Rollin Shane, Peoria,Ill; Albert Shane, Glen Elder, Kan; Lester Shane, Portage, Mont; Mrs. O.G. Hurd, Peoria, Ill; William Shane, Peoria, Ill; Mrs. George Kuhn, Green Valley, Ill; One brother, Daniel Shane, Winfield, Kan; and a sister Mrs. Lydia Satterlee, Los Angeles. 193	ALFRED THE GREAT, King of England, 871-899, He was crowned king at Winchester, 871; founded the British Navy, organized the militia, compiled a code of laws, built schools and monasteries, and invited scholars to live at his court. 194	Alice Louise Shane, 86, of Sharpsburg, died Thursday, Oct. 5, in Reeder Memorial Home in Boonsboro. Born in Altoona, Pa.; she was the daughter of the late Charles and Clara Alice Parker Jones. Her husband, Norris C. Shane died in 1985. A son, Robert Shane, also preceded her in death. She was a member of Manor Church of the Brethren in Boonsboro. She was also a member of the Ladies Elks in Hagerstown and the Southeastern Washington County Senior Citizens. She is survived by three daughters, Joan Kay macKenzie of hagerstown, Sarah Ellen Warner of Silver Spring, Md., and Elizabeth A. Malloy of San Antonio, Tx.; three sons, Norris D. Shane of San Antonio, Alan R. Shane of Williamsport, and Philip O. Shane of Mt. Airy, Md.; 21 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday Oct. 15 at Manor Church of the Brethren. The Rev. Loyal H. Vanderveer will officiate. Burial will be private. 198	ALLEN HAD A STROKE WHICH DID NOT ALLOW HIM TO WORK ON THE FARM 1168 ALLEN BUCKLEY MILLER Allen B. Miller, familiarly known as "Bob," died at his father's home in Union township, one mile northwest of Mapleton, at 7:15 o'clock, Thursday evening, May 15, 1913. Deceased was a son of George and Elizabeth Buckley Miller and was born August 18, 1860, on the farm in Hares Valley, one mile southwest of Mapleton, now owned by B.F. Godard and occupied by J.A. Crownover, being at the time of his death 52 years, 8 months and 27 days. While he was but a mere lad his father purchased and the family moved to the Joshua Jones farm where the remainder of his life was spent. "Bob," was a home lover and while he was of an amiable and congenial disposition his idea of amiability was in having his friends come to his home where they were always made welcome and hospitably entertained. He was clean in character, faithful in friendship, helpful in neighborliness and deemed it a pleasure to render a favor. He kept well posted in the affairs of the day and was a man of discriminating judgement. His native ability and skill in handicraft showed a great deal of intelligence. Though a host of widely diffused would have felt honored by his visits, he seldom went away from home except to render a kindess, but found his chief delight within the quiet of the home circle. He was a good man. September 24th, of last year he sustained a stroke of paralysis while in the fields in search of cattle and before he was found exposed to inclemency of the weather. From this he never entirely recovered and to this is attributed his death. He was a member of Mapleton Lodge No 468, I.O.O.F. He is survived by his aged father and by two sisters and two brothers: Mrs. D.E. Parker of Juniata, Jacob H. of Mapleton and Miss Annie and John L. at home. The remains were interred Sunday afternoon in Mountain View Cemetary, services conducted by Rev. J. Merrill Williams, assisted by Rev. H.B. Ritter, being held at the home. The I.O.O.
