ANNA MILLER

Anna Miller, widow of Joseph Miller, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James McCloskey, Altoona, of diseases incident to old age. She had been in failing health for several weeks. Deceased was born in Hare's Valley, this county, December 11, 1829, being aged 76 years, 1 month, and 16 days. She is survived by these children, James and Mr.s James McCloskey of Altoona, and David of Upper Reese. She is also survived by these brothers and sisters: George, Henry and David Miller and Miss Judy Miller, of Mapleton, Pa., Mrs. Leah Beatty, of Shirley township, Huntingdon county, and Gideon Miller, of Meade, Neb. The funeral took place Tuesday afternoon, services being conducted at the house at 2 o'clock. Interment in Greenwood Cemetary.

Barn Burned 715

The large barn on George Miller's farm about one mile north-west of Mapleton was totally destroyed by fire with all its contents by fire Wednesday evening, October 26th. How the fire originated is a mystery but the barn was a mass of flames when it was discovered. It occurred a few minutes before 7 o'clock in the evening. Mr. Miller had just finished husking corn late the same evening, and all his crop of this year and much of last year's crop was in the barn. The estimate of contents is as follows: fifteen tons of hay, 175 bushels of wheat, over 100 bushels of oats, about 20 bushels of buckwheat, between three and four hundred bushels of corn, a lot of cornfodder, a lot of straw, three plows, mower, hayrake and a reaper belonging to Joseph Grove. In the stables were Mr. Miller's four mules which have been frequently been pronounced the best mule team in the county. He refused $400 for two of these but a short time ago. These animals perished and all the harness was burned. The house and other buildings were saved by the exertion of the bucket brigades.

GEORGE MILLER
George Miller, who almost eleven years ago, sustained a stroke of paralysis, died at his home one mile northwest of Mapleton at 8:25 o'clock, Tuesday morning, September 19, 1916.
Deceased was a son of the late Jacob and Rachel (Dell) Miller and was born in Trough Creek valley May 23, 1831, hence was aged 85 years, 3 months and 26 days. All his life he was a resident of Union township. August 18, 1853 , he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Buckley, of Shirley township. To this union were born seven children of whom three are living. They are Mrs. (Alice) D. E. Parker, of Juniata, Jacob H. of Mapleton and Miss Annie at home. Those deceased are Jennie, intermarried with George W. Morgan, who died in December ,1905, Allen B. who died May 15, 1913, John L. who died July 26, 1913 and Ella, who was killed by a passenger train at Mapleton, the evening of February 7, 1885. Mrs. Miller died April 1, 1878. He is also survived by one brother David B. Miller, of Mapleton; and one sister, Mrs. Leah Beaty, widow of George W. Beaty, of Shirley township; also by one Half-brother, Gideon C. Miller, of Meade, Nebraska. , and one half-sister, Miss Mary J. Miller, of Mapleton.
Mr. Miller, soon after his marriage purchased a small piece of land in Hares valley, one and one-half miles southwest of Mapleton (now in part owned by Jesse Boring) and lived there until 1873 when he purchased the Joshua Jones farm to which he moved his family in 1874 and which has since been home. In the meantime he lived on the M.F. Campbell place. The Miller home was always a hospitable place and it was a rare day when there were no visitors there. The glad hand was always extended to friends and strangers. Mr. Miller, like his ancestors, was fond of the chase. He was one of the best woodsmen we have ever known and was a hardworking, industrious man and a splendid farmer. He was scrupuously honest in all his transactions and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. In early life he was converted at the Methodist Episcopal altar but never united with any church. During the long years of his invalidism he was happy, cheerful and trustful. The community has lost a good man and a good neighbor.
Funeral services will be held at the home tomorrow afternoon and will be conducted by Rev. H.T. Covert after which the remains will be interred in Mountain View Cemetary.

HENRY MILLER
Henry Miller, one of the oldest residents of this section, died at his home in Union township, one mile west of Mapleton, at 11 o'clock a.m., December 26, 1908, of senile gangrene. The gangrene resulted from an injury received to the great toe of the right foot last winter by wearing a felt boot that was to short for this foot. In April last he began to suffer from pain in the toe and from that time until death he was confined to his home, most of the time being unable to walk.
Henry Miller was the son of the late Jacob and Rachel (Dell) Miller and was born on the Miller homestead (now the property of A.K. Miller heirs) July 9, 1834, being at death aged 74 years, 5 months and 17 days. He grew to manhood on the farm and March 24, 1858, was united in marriage to Mary Wilson, and all their married life was spent in this vicinity.
To them were born twelve children, nine of them whom survive, together with his widow. The surviving children are Miss Priscilla E. Miller, of Philadelphia; Miss Rachel, at home; Thompson Miller, of Blair County; Mrs. W. H. Barkley, of Union township; Mrs. Lewis C. Corbin, of Juniata township; Mrs. Belle Grant and Isaac Miller, of Altoona; Mrs. Harry Wagner, and Wesley Miller of Mapleton.
He is also survived by two brothers- George Miller, of Union township, David B. Miller, of Mapleton, one half-brother, Gideon C. Miller, of Mead, Nebraska, and one half-sister, Miss Mary J. Miller, of Mapleton.
While a young man Mr. Miller became converted and upwards of forty years had been a member of the Mapleton United Brethren Church. When able he was always present at the services of his church and every duty he earnestly performed. He will now be rewarded for his Christian life which he spent on the earth.
The funeral was held in the U.B. church yesterday morning at 10 o'clock. The services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. G.R. Alban, assisted by Rev. J.H. Ake, of the M.E. church. Interment was made in Mountain View Cemetery.

Mrs. Martha Stever, of this place, died at the Jefferson Hospital, Philadelphia, Wednesday evening, November 30, 1892, at 8:15 o'clock. The sad intelligence was received at Mapleton the following morning and caused a gloom to be cast over the community. They remains were brought to Maplton on Friday morning and Sunday afternoon were interred in the Mountain View Cemetary. Services, conducted by Rev. C.L. Benscoter, were held in the M.E. church at 12 o'clock, and so great was the number of those who wished to join in the paying of a last tribute to her that the church would not accomodate them.
Mrs. Stever was the daughter of the late Jacob Miller, of Hare's valley and was born on the farm in Hare's Valley April 8, 1838. She was married to Israel Stever January 2, 1966. To this union four children -three sons and one daughter - were born. The first born son, Sidney Grant, died in Mapleton June 18, 1869, and was buried at Cassville. In the spring of 1870 they went to Kansas and soon after located at Fairfield, Iowa, where Mr. Stever died November 2, 1875. The next spring Mrs. Stever returned with her three small children to Mapleton.

MRS. ALICE SARAH PARKER
Mrs. Alice Sarah Parker died at her late home in Alexandria on Thursday evening, April 22, 1937, at 5:15 o'clock. Mrs. Parker had been ill ten months and death was due to a complication of diseases.
She was born near Mapleton on October 23, 1854, a daughter of George and Elizabeth (Buckley) Miller, both deceased. At the time of death she was aged 82 years, 5 months and 29 days.
On May 20, 1880 she was united in marriage to David E. Parker. who preceded her in death in February 27, 1937. Mr. and Mrs. Parker had resided in Altoona until 1924 when they came to Alexandria to live.
She was a faithful and devout member of the Presbyterian Church at Alexandria.
She leaves to mourn her passing, two daughters: Mrs. Clara Jones, and Miss Dora Parker, of Alexandria and two grandchildren, Mrs. Nora (sic) Shane, of Beltsville, Maryland and Robert Jones of Altoona. One sister, Mrs. Anna Miller, of Mapleton and seven great gandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held at her late home in Alexandria on Sunday afternoon, April 25, 1937, at 2:30 o'clock, with the Rev. H.T. Smith, officiating. Interment will be made in the Alexandria cemetary.

ALLEN BUCKLEY MILLER

Allen B. Miller, familiarly known as "Bob," died at his father's home in Union township, one mile northwest of Mapleton, at 7:15 o'clock, Thursday evening, May 15, 1913.
Deceased was a son of George and Elizabeth Buckley Miller and was born August 18, 1860, on the farm in Hares Valley, one mile southwest of Mapleton, now owned by B.F. Godard and occupied by J.A. Crownover, being at the time of his death 52 years, 8 months and 27 days. While he was but a mere lad his father purchased and the family moved to the Joshua Jones farm where the remainder of his life was spent. "Bob," was a home lover and while he was of an amiable and congenial disposition his idea of amiability was in having his friends come to his home where they were always made welcome and hospitably entertained. He was clean in character, faithful in friendship, helpful in neighborliness and deemed it a pleasure to render a favor. He kept well posted in the affairs of the day and was a man of discriminating judgement. His native ability and skill in handicraft showed a great deal of intelligence. Though a host of widely diffused would have felt honored by his visits, he seldom went away from home except to render a kindess, but found his chief delight within the quiet of the home circle. He was a good man.
September 24th, of last year he sustained a stroke of paralysis while in the fields in search of cattle and before he was found exposed to inclemency of the weather. From this he never entirely recovered and to this is attributed his death. He was a member of Mapleton Lodge No 468, I.O.O.F.
He is survived by his aged father and by two sisters and two brothers: Mrs. D.E. Parker of Juniata, Jacob H. of Mapleton and Miss Annie and John L. at home.
The remains were interred Sunday afternoon in Mountain View Cemetary, services conducted by Rev. J. Merrill Williams, assisted by Rev. H.B. Ritter, being held at the home. The I.O.O. F. took part in the services at the grave.

Obituary of Mary Ellen Miller from article on her death at the Railroad tracks

Mary Ellen Miller was born October 2nd, 1867, making her just 17 years, 4 months and 5 days old at the time of her death. She was the youngest of the family and the pet of the household. She was magnificently formed and was very pretty. She was a great reader and was quite intelligent. She was a member of the the writer's Sunday school class and her seat was seldom vacant. She was a favorite in the community and will be sadly missed. The family is overcome with grief. All bear it tolerably well. Miss Jennie is much dejected in sprits and suffers great nervous prostration. The injured sister, Annie, was told of Ella's death on Monday and she bears up under the stroke herocially. Ella's remains were taken to the Nebo cemetary. in Shirley township, on Tuesday and interred by the side of the mother, who died April 1878. Notwithstanding the day was very stormy a great company of sorrowing firnds and relatives followed the remains to their last resting place. The services at the church were conducted by Revs. T.P. Orner and L.F. Smith and were very impressive. This Thursday morning Annie is resting nicely and there is no doubt but what she will recover. We extend our sympathies to the bereaved and afflicted family.

MRS. CLARA ALICE JONES

Of Alexandria died at 11:35 p.m. in the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, after an extended illness. She was born in Altoona Feb. 28, 1881, a daughter of David E. and Alice (Miller) Parker, and was married to Charles A. Jones at Derry June 11, 1902. Mr. Jones died May 8, 1928. Surviving are two children, Mrs. Morris [Norris] Shane of Ijamsville, Md., and Robert A. of Altoona; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Miss Dora of Alexandria. She was a member of the Alexandria Presbyterian Church, Ever Ready Bible Class, W.E. Stewart Missionary Society, Hartslog Valley Grange, Huntingdon County Pomona Grange and the D. of A. of Altoona. Mrs. Jones was valedictorian of the 1900 class of the Altoona High School. Friends will be received at the Cove Funeral Home, Alexandria, after 2:30 p.m. tomorrow.
