  1. 2.  Steele, Robert Moore was born on 7 Apr 1812 in Centre, Pennsylvania, USA (son of Steele, Martin and Moore, Mary); died on 13 Dec 1889 in Meigs County, Ohio, USA; was buried .

    Notes:

    - Rev. Peter Gray

Robert Moore Steele appears to have lived in Centre County, Pennsylvania until 1846 (34 yrs. old). He is listed as a Justice of the Peace in Huston Township on 4/15/1846 and his son Jasper was born there 5/18/1846. Shortly thereafter he removed his family to Lawrence County, OH. Census reports list him as a laborer in Elizabeth Township in 1850, and as a collier in Milton Township, Jackson County, OH in 1860. Robert enlisted in the U.S. Army on 12/10/1861 to serve for 3 years. He was 1st Sergeant to Captain John Cook, Company K, 56th Regiment, OH Volunteer Infantry. He received a medical discharge on 9/6/1862 at Columbus, OH. The reason given for the medical discharge is "Eczema". His address on the discharge was Reeds Mills, Vinton County, OH. His Army discharge describes R.M. Steele as 6 feet in height; dark complexion; Hazel eyes; Grey hair. His occupation when he enlisted was "Furnaceman". His age on the discharge was 44, however he was actually 50 according to family records and census reports. This discrepancy implies that Robert reduced his age (lied?) so as to be able to enlist in the Army. His son Robert added a couple years to his age so as to enlist, and his son's George and James were also in the Army.

Robert married Leebrick (Lebrick), Caroline Belinda on 21 Oct 1836 in Petersburg, Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, USA. Caroline (daughter of Leebrick, Daniel Henry and Peters, Elizabeth) was born on 6 Apr 1816 in Virginia, USA; died on 11 Apr 1900 in Hamden, Vinton, Ohio, USA; was buried . Notes:

Steele : English Place name, from 'stile' or a place of steep ascent.

It is not known when Francis Steele emigrated to America. He was born in Northern Ireland in 1741 and was married in Pennsylvania in 1771. Francis and Margaret Crow were married by a minister of the Church of England. They were living in Warwick Furnace, Chester County, Pennsylvania when Francis was called up by the Pennsylvania Militia. He was commissioned an Ensign of a company of foot. The commission is dated May 31, 1777. An extract of a listing of officers is as follows:

4th Batt. of Militia of Chester County
    6th Company
    James Boylan Captain
    Saml. Hammel 1 Leut.
    Jas. McAllister 2 Leut.
    Francis Steel Ensign
    Certified: Wm. Evans, Col. 6-5-1777

Francis was three (3) times in service for 2 months each time for total service time of 6 months. He was drafted once and twice he substituted for other men who were called up. He served under General Irvin. He was at the Battle of Brandywine and participated in a skirmish near Wilmington, Delaware.
After the war, Francis and Margaret lived in Philadelphia and Myerstown, and then they moved to Centre County where they lived on a farm.
Testimonials in Margaret Steele's declaration for a widow's pension indicate the following residences.
"For some time" in Brandywine, Chester County (signed Nathan Grier VDM; Nov. 4th - 1789).
"For some considerable time" in Bellefonte, Centre County (signed Henry R. Wilson VDM; March 10th 1806).
"Was several years in our congregation" (signed) William A. Boyd V. D. M. and Pastor of Spruce Creek and Sinking Valleys. Certified at Spruce Creek, Huntingdon County; October 22nd 1817.

The spelling of "Steele" and "Steel" are used at the discretion of the speller. Francis' signature appears on his will and is spelled "Steele." His commision and other militia records spell his name "Steel." Francis' son Martin spelled his name "Steel" and Martin's son Robert M. reverted to "Steele." Take your choice!
