Mr. and Mrs. D.E. Parker to Remove to Huntingdon County

Ending a sojourn of over a third of a century in Juniata, Mr. and Mrs. D.E. Parker propose to remove their household to Alexandria, in Huntingdon county and their residence at 703 Sixth avenue, has been leased to Dr. William R. Brewer, of Tyrone, who will locate here to practice medicine. Just when the removal will occur is not definite, but Mr. Parker is contemplating the purchase of a home in Alexandria and the change will likely occur before October 15-the date that Mr. Brewer takes possession of the commodious dwelling in which the well-known Juniatian has resided during the past eighteen years.
Mr. Parker has had a personal part in every step of Juniata's development since his removal here from Altoona on August 12, 1890 with his wife and two little daughters, occupying a home that he had built on Third Avenue near Ninth street in the thinly settled village. His interest in the hamlet about which the name Bellview still lingered began, however, two years earlier, in 1888, when he became a member of the firm of Kline, Parker and company, that erected and operated a planing mill that was for three years located near the present site of WU office in the P.R.R. classification yard.

    ROBERT PARKER
Robert Parker, whose illness has been mentioned in these columns, died of heart trouble at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Annie Slates, in this place at 10 o'clock Tuesday evening, October 25, 1892. His remains were interred in Mountain View Cemetery, Thursday afternoon, services being conducted by Rev. A.W. Maxwell.
Mr. Parker was born in Centre county, November 16, 1813, hence was at the time of his death 78 years, 11 months, and 9 days. He was married to Miss Mary C. Robley, September 3, 1835.
They commenced housekeeping at Spruce Creek, lived some time in Mifflin county and in 1863 moved to Smith valley, where Mrs. Parker died August 20, 1880. In 1882 he broke up housekeeping and with his daughter Annie spent a year in the West. Two sisters- Mrs. Catharine Clark, of Bellwood, and Mrs. Reuben Dittsworth, of Neff's Mills--and eight of his children survive him. The children are William, of Iowa, Mrs. Annie Slates and Albert M., of Mapleton; Hiram, Mrs. Mary Comstock, Oliver, and David, of Altoona, and Mrs. Laura Smith, of Cass township.
Mr. Parker was a good citizen and a devout Christian man. When convinced that a thing was right nothing could swerve him. This is illustrated by his convictions on the prohibition question. He was opposed to the rum traffic and for years only one prohibition vote was polled at each election in Union township and everybody who knew him knew it was Robert Parker's vote. A few days before his death his pastor asked him, " Well, father, how is it now, down along the river?" His reply was,"Oh, that's all right; I fixed that matter many years ago." Such a man would naturally be greatly missed in any community. The friends, who are thankful for the kindness shown them during Mr. Parker's long illness, have the sympathy of the community.

    Barn Burned 715

The large barn on George Miller's farm about one mile north-west of Mapleton was totally destroyed by fire with all its contents by fire Wednesday evening, October 26th. How the fire originated is a mystery but the barn was a mass of flames when it was discovered. It occurred a few minutes before 7 o'clock in the evening. Mr. Miller had just finished husking corn late the same evening, and all his crop of this year and much of last year's crop was in the barn. The estimate of contents is as follows: fifteen tons of hay, 175 bushels of wheat, over 100 bushels of oats, about 20 bushels of buckwheat, between three and four hundred bushels of corn, a lot of cornfodder, a lot of straw, three plows, mower, hayrake and a reaper belonging to Joseph Grove. In the stables were Mr. Miller's four mules which have been frequently been pronounced the best mule team in the county. He refused $400 for two of these but a short time ago. These animals perished and all the harness was burned. The house and other buildings were saved by the exertion of the bucket brigades.

    GEORGE MILLER
George Miller, who almost eleven years ago, sustained a stroke of paralysis, died at his home one mile northwest of Mapleton at 8:25 o'clock, Tuesday morning, September 19, 1916.
Deceased was a son of the late Jacob and Rachel (Dell) Miller and was born in Trough Creek valley May 23, 1831, hence was aged 85 years, 3 months and 26 days. All his life he was a resident of Union township. August 18, 1853 , he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Buckley, of Shirley township. To this union were born seven children of whom three are living. They are Mrs. (Alice) D. E. Parker, of Juniata, Jacob H. of Mapleton and Miss Annie at home. Those deceased are Jennie, intermarried with George W. Morgan, who died in December ,1905, Allen B. who died May 15, 1913, John L. who died July 26, 1913 and Ella, who was killed by a passenger train at Mapleton, the evening of February 7, 1885. Mrs. Miller died April 1, 1878. He is also survived by one brother David B. Miller, of Mapleton; and one sister, Mrs. Leah Beaty, widow of George W. Beaty, of Shirley township; also by one Half-brother, Gideon C. Miller, of Meade, Nebraska. , and one half-sister, Miss Mary J. Miller, of Mapleton.
Mr. Miller, soon after his marriage purchased a small piece of land in Hares valley, one and one-half miles southwest of Mapleton (now in part owned by Jesse Boring) and lived there until 1873 when he purchased the Joshua Jones farm to which he moved his family in 1874 and which has since been home. In the meantime he lived on the M.F. Campbell place. The Miller home was always a hospitable place and it was a rare day when there were no visitors there. The glad hand was always extended to friends and strangers. Mr. Miller, like his ancestors, was fond of the chase. He was one of the best woodsmen we have ever known and was a hardworking, industrious man and a splendid farmer. He was scrupuously honest in all his transactions and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. In early life he was converted at the Methodist Episcopal altar but never united with any church. During the long years of his invalidism he was happy, cheerful and trustful. The community has lost a good man and a good neighbor.
Funeral services will be held at the home tomorrow afternoon and will be conducted by Rev. H.T. Covert after which the remains will be interred in Mountain View Cemetary.

    DIED
MILLER - Near Mapleton, on April 7th 1878, Mrs. Elizabeth, wife of Geo. Miller, aged 52 years, 7 months and 25 days.
Sister Miller was a member of the U.B. Church at Mapleton. Her suffering was quite a trial indeed, yet withal she bore it with Christian fortitude and patience, and with a glorious hope she waited until the solemn summons came. Her life was one of diligence as a wife and mother, and worthy of imitation in her Christian deportment. Although for some years she was not permitted to frequent a house of the Lord (on account of declining health), yet her faith was firm and she longed to pass over the river. She leaves to mourn their loss, a kind husband, four daughters and three sons, all dear and affectionate. The youngest was her pet daughter, aged about 11 years, with whom the parting was heart touching; none knew her but to love her and our loss is her eternal gain. Loved ones need not mourn as those who have no hope. She cannot come to you but Christ has opened up a way by which you can go to her. "Seek that way."
