    Notes:

(1899) Died Monday night, at his home on East Olive Street, from a stroke of paralysis received
about three weeks since, John Shane, in the 73d year of his age. Funeral services were held
yesterday afternoon, the M.E. Church, Rev. Doney officiating. Mr. Shane was born in Virginia in
    1826.
In 1835 the family came to Illinois, residing in Peoria County for a time and coming from there to
    Fulton County in 1850.
Mr. Shane married Miss Hannah F. Hazen, who died in 1890. Two daughters survive, one of
them, Miss Susan, having lived with her father. For many years Mr. Shane lived on a farm north of
Canton, on which was a beautiful grove which was the resort for picnic parties for many years --
    Fulton County Ledger, Feb. 16.
Mr. Shane was a brother of the late Hiram Shane and Mrs. Mary Merriot, and will be
remembered by the old settlers of Brimfield. He is the last one of a family of nine children, all of
his brothers and sisters having preceded him to the home beyond. Mr. and Mrs. James King, of
this place, were in attendance at the funeral services.

John married Hazen, Hannah F on 20 Feb 1850 in Fulton, Whiteside, Illinois, USA. Hannah was born on 17 Apr 1827 in Warren, New Jersey, USA; died on 3 Aug 1890 in Canton, Fulton, Illinois, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Hazen, Hannah F was born on 17 Apr 1827 in Warren, New Jersey, USA; died on 3 Aug 1890 in Canton, Fulton, Illinois, USA.

    Notes:

Died at her residence, north of Canton, at two o'clock Sunday morning, August 3, 1890, Mrs.
Hannah F. Shane, 63 years, 3 months and 16 days.
The deceased was born in Warren County, New Jersey, in 1827. In 1841 she united with the
Methodist Episcopal Church in Canton, and was married to John Shane, in Lewiston, February
    20, 1850.
Before she passed away she told her husband and daughter that everything was bright as day and
said, "you must all be good."
She leaves a husband and daughter to survive her.

Day by day we saw her falling,
As the summer days went by,
And our hearts were sad and lonely
When we saw she must die.

We loved our wife and mother. She's sleeping,
    Earthly cares are hers no more;
    Safe within the angel's keeping,
With our son and brother gone before.

But her heart seemed fondly clinging
    To the blessed promise given.
    "I'm not afraid," she whispered,
"For 'tis but a step to Heaven."

    Notes:

Berkeley county was created from Virginia as part of the state of West Virginia. It did not officially become part of West Virginia, USA until after the Civil War.

Marriage Records of Berkeley County Virginia, USA 1781-1854 & bond 4-15
LETTER AT PO JUL 7, 1814
    VOL 16-1814-1815
Wife was noted as Katherine or Catherine Snode.
There is also death date of 1869 in some of the records. Brown Cemetery is also
    called Thomas/Shane Cemetery.

Bureau of Land Management, General Land Office Records; Washington D.C., ; Federal Land Patents, State Volumes records James Shane of Peoria County purchased 144 84/100 acres at the NW 1/4 Section 6 Township 10 north of the baseline of Range Six East of the 4th PM,

James married Shrode, Catherine on 15 Apr 1809 in the former Berkeley County, Virginia;, Berkeley County, West Virginia, USA. Catherine (daughter of Shrode, Solomon and Neff, Anna Maria Mary) was born in 1788 in Pennsylvania, USA; died before 1835. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Shrode, Catherine was born in 1788 in Pennsylvania, USA (daughter of Shrode, Solomon and Neff, Anna Maria Mary); died before 1835.

    Notes:

in the 1880 census, Elizabeth Shane Brown stated Catherine was born in Penn.

I received the following from Max Grove, who looked in his books for mentions of the Shanes and Shrodes.
"There is quite a bit available about your family.

First, the maiden name of Catherine is Shroad, Shrodes and other spellings, not Snode.
She was b. circa 1789 at Somerset, Pennsylvania, USA. That is the south western part of the state. She died 1870 at Howard, Wayne County, Iowa.

Her parents were Soloman Shrodes, Shroad etc. and Anna Mary (Unknown maiden name) who were married in Pennsylvania, USA in 1772. Anna Mary was b. 1755 in Pennsylvania, USA and died in Berkeley County, Virginia, USA, (West Virginia, USA) circa 1810. Soloman was b. circa 1750 and d. after 1811 in Berkeley County, Virginia, USA (West Virginia, USA). I have not yet found the grave sites of Soloman and Anna Mary.

Catherine m. James Shane in Berkeley County Virginia, USA, (West Virginia, USA), circa Apr 14, 1809. The Marriage Bond suretor was James Booth and the bond is recorded in Berkeley County Marriage Bond book #3, pg. 112. The marriage date was not recorded, only the bond date. That could be due to several reasons, (1) they never got married, (2) the minister, who is not recorded, never returned the marriage certificate, or they were married outside Berkeley County.

James William Shane b. circa 1787 (63 years old in the 1850 census) and died May 21, 1874. The 1870 Census for Wayne County, Iowa shows him living with the Amos Brown family and he is 82 years old and blind. It should also be noted that in the 1850 Census, James Shane was living with Amos & Hannah Brown and their 4 children, plus James' son Caleb, who was 21 years old. Catherine is not shown to be living in this household. In the 1850 census, James is living in District 56, Woodford, Illinois, USA. In 1830 Census Berkeley County, Virginia, USA (West Virginia, USA), James Shane and his family of 7 people lived at Middletown, now Gerrardstown, West Virginia, USA, probably near his inlaws, the Shrodes who are buried in the Gerrardstown Presbyterian Cemetery. I have yet to find a connection between Frank Shane and James W. Shane.
